How to Keep Your Digital Menu Fresh Through the Seasons Without Reshooting Everything

Most restaurants in Alsace change part of their menu with the seasons: choucroute and game in autumn, light salads and asparagus in spring, something warming for the winter. On a printed menu, that change means a reprint, so it tends to happen once or twice a year. A digital menu removes that friction, but it creates a different trap — dishes get swapped in quickly, and the photos never catch up.

The result is a menu where half the dishes have a professional photo and the other half show a grey placeholder, or worse, a quick phone snapshot taken under kitchen lighting. Guests notice the mismatch immediately, and it doesn't just hurt the new dishes. It makes the whole menu feel unfinished, and the dishes with weaker visuals are usually the ones you most want to sell, because they're new and often higher margin.

The practical fix is to stop thinking in terms of a full reshoot and start thinking in terms of a small seasonal batch. A typical seasonal change touches four to eight dishes, not the whole menu. Shooting only those, in one short session, keeps the cost reasonable and means the new photos are ready on the day the dishes launch rather than three weeks later.

Consistency is what makes this work. If the original photos were shot on a certain surface, with a certain angle and light, the seasonal batch should match them, so new and old dishes look like they belong to the same menu. That's one more reason to keep a simple style guide from the first shoot: the background, the plate colours, the camera height. It turns every later update into a repeatable job instead of a fresh creative decision.

It also helps to plan ahead with the kitchen. Agree on the new dishes a few weeks before launch, let the chef finalise the plating, and book the photo session for a quiet afternoon so each dish can be shot at its best. With the winter menu and the Christmas market crowds only weeks away in Strasbourg, now is a good moment to decide which dishes are worth a fresh photo, and to have them live before the busiest service of the year.
